Box Breathing App for iPhone: Guided Sessions in 2 Minutes

Why use an app for box breathing
Box breathing is a four-part pattern: inhale, hold, exhale, hold, each for the same count. It sounds simple, but counting silently while you breathe takes attention away from the calming effect. By the third cycle you may be wondering whether that was four seconds or five.
A guided app removes the counting. You follow a visual pacer, close your eyes if you like, and let the rhythm do the work. Most sessions take 1 to 3 minutes.
Box breathing on iPhone with BreathInU
BreathInU includes Box Breathing in the Breathing category. On iPhone:
- Open the Home tab or browse Breathing.
- Tap Box Breathing.
- Watch the shape expand and contract through all four sides of the box, with a soft sound cue at each transition.
- Close your eyes after the first breath if you prefer; the sound keeps you on pace.
By default the app runs 5 breaths of 4 seconds per side (about 80 seconds). Open the settings before you start to adjust the duration or number of breaths. Once you complete the same count three times in a row, the app adds one more breath.
When to use box breathing on your phone
- Before a meeting or call: one cycle of 4-4-4-4 steadies the voice and slows the heart.
- Between tasks: a 1-minute reset instead of scrolling.
- On the commute: if you are not driving, put in earbuds and close your eyes.
- Before sleep: lying in bed with a gentle hold count to quiet a racing mind.
The phone is already in your hand or pocket, so starting a session is quick. A home screen widget shows your streak and opens the app with one tap.
Box breathing vs other breathing apps
Many breathing apps include box breathing, but most are built around meditation or sleep, with long sessions, background music, and subscription walls before you can adjust the timing.
BreathInU is built for short breaks, not meditation. Most sessions are 2 to 5 minutes. The pacer is simple: a shape, a sound, no voice-over unless you want it. The free version includes full sessions; the subscription unlocks all exercises and removes limits on customisation.
What else is in BreathInU
Box breathing is one of several breathing exercises in the app:
- Simple Breath (cardiac coherence): 5 seconds in, 5 out, no holds. See the cardiac coherence guide.
- Steady Box 4-6: a variation with 4-second breath, 6-second holds.
- Pursed-Lip Breathing: inhale for 2, exhale for 4 through almost-closed lips. See the pursed-lip breathing guide.
- Diaphragmatic, lateral and alternate nostril breathing for focus and calm.
Beyond breathing, the app includes neck and shoulder stretches, eye exercises and paced walking, so a break can work on your whole body.
